In October 2024, Energinet, Denmark’s national transmission system operator for electricity and gas partnered with Airpelago to conduct an inspection of 132kV assets using autonomous drones and the Airpelago Power software for project coordination and assessment of captured data.
Project highlights:
“Airpelago delivered a detailed inspection in good quality in an effective way. Their overall approach was professional from start to finish.” - Christian Christiansen, Specialist Energinet
To complete this first project in Denmark, Airpelago utilised high-resolution LiDAR mapping to ensure a detailed scan of Energinet’s assets. We also used the DJI Matrice 350 RTK drone equipped with the 120 megapixel Phase One P3 camera to achieve excellent image quality, ensuring sufficient level of detail to meet Energinets requirements for the specific inspection project.
Our inspections focused on providing Energinet with high-resolution visuals focused on corrosion detection. In dialogue with representatives from Energinet, we developed an automated drone flight pattern to capture 21 images per asset, optimized for efficiency and properly capturing good data of all point of interests with sufficient image quality. The automated drone flight pattern was based on LiDAR data and is deployed for each asset while dynamically taking potential obstacles into account.
The captured data is visualized in Airpelago’s proprietary software, Airpelago Power, where representatives from Energinet were provided access to assess the quality of the captured data.
“Partnering with Energinet on this project proves the increased efficacy that Airpelago’s technology brings to infrastructure inspections. I am very pleased with the outcome in this project and proud to have another satisfied customer” - Felix Karlsson, CCO at Airpelago
The data capturing was completed in less than one week, with a minimal environmental impact and in a safer and more scalable way than alternative inspection methods.
We are looking forward to future collaborations with Energinet and other TSOs across Europe.
Airpelago, headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, is on a mission to replace helicopters with autonomous drones for power line inspections. Airpelago's software solution enables superior efficiency, automation, and data quality. The transition to drones has just begun, and Airpelago is leading the way with a scalable solution.
